My nephew, Braxton, had to undergo heart surgery this past week, and I wanted to send something to him as a "Get Well" gift. My first idea was to find a shirt/outfit with a heart shape on it; however, being a boy, it is a bit hard. So Mindy Lacefield sent out June's project idea...and I knew what I was going to make. An ornament with a bunny (symbol of good luck for him and his mom).
Paper clay is soo soo easy to work with. It basically molds like clay, yet dries like the weight of paper...super light. I formed an organic shape adding various indentations with stamps, pens, utensils, etc. Some ink got on the shapes from previous use.
I added a 3D bunny and heart to the design by: 1) molding the shape on a separate mat, 2) using a paintbrush to wet the bottom of the element and the ornament at the location it will be placed, 3) lightly pushing the element down & merging the sides so it will dry together, and 4) adding small indentions for details to be added later.
Let dry for about 2 days. The bottom takes longer to dry...and if you flip it over, it will warp.
Once dry, paint the entire piece in one dark color. Makes sure to get into every nook and cranny.
Then paint areas you want to be different colors. I added details to the bunny's face, used various colors to highlight the shapes indented. I wanted to keep the colors lighter vs. dark, so a lot of the dark lines were recovered by brighter, happier colors.
I thought I was finished, but after a day....I wanted to make it lighter. The dark wasn't appealing to me in the background, but I did like various elements on the ornament.
SOOO....THE SOLUTION WAS YELLOW + SOME GLITTER.
GET WELL BRAX!! XOXO AUNT ALI
